| Loja da Lenha (The Old Wood Store), Funchal |
NEW ON THE MARKET! |
Loja da Lenha is one of three beautifully restored gems which have just become available for holiday rental (May 2009). Comfortable and perfect for 2 guests, this very spacious ground floor accommodation has 1 bedroom with en-suite bathroom and a patio area (shaded by vines in the summer and autumn) for relaxing/eating outside. It is set within the 4-acre working estate of Quinta Vista Alegre where bananas and vines are grown and century-old tropical gardens are tended. Astonishingly, this oasis of tranquillity is found in the most sought-after tourist area of Funchal, near the sea and Reid's Palace Hotel. An opportunity not to be missed!

Opposite the gates of Quinta Vista Alegre (where the cottages are) is the entrance to Quinta Magnolia, previously The British Country Club which was bought by the Regional Government. Here you can enjoy beautiful gardens and an esplanade bar or sports such as a fitness circuit and four tennis courts - all set in an area of about 40,000 square meters. Sea and pool swimming can be found at the nearby Hotel Penha da França Mar, Club Turismo or the public Lido, about 1 km by foot or bus, or you may just want to walk along the coastal path that extends for several kilometres beyond the Lido. Buses/taxis are close and frequent and the journey into Funchal city centre, to visit the Old Town, market or harbour for instance, takes only a few minutes. A car is not essential but advisable if you want to explore this beautiful island. |
| Background info: |
The 4-acre estate of Quinta Vista Alegre has been in the Zino family for 70 years, the owners being the third generation. The main house was built around 1867. It is a working Quinta growing vines and bananas in the centre of Funchal. Much of the garden was laid out by an English family, the Stanfords, between 1902 and 1912 and Charles Thomas-Stanford wrote “Leaves from a Madeira garden” about his garden and the island. The “Vista Cottages” are in the original stone, set among the bananas and vines, having been converted in 2009 from the old Billiard House, Stables and Factors accommodation. |
