CASA MADRINHA, Arco da Calheta
A fabulous new home with heated pool, designed and built by us (Tony & Judith, owners of Island Homes Rentals) in the pretty village of Arco da Calheta, thirty minutes drive west of Funchal on the south coast of the island. Inside this comfortable 2 bedroom 3 bathroom house there are wonderfully spacious rooms with breathtaking views overlooking the Atlantic; outside, in the pool area, you have complete privacy for sunbathing and swimming in full sun and eating meals in shade. Our ground-floor en-suite guest bedroom is available for rental during periods when we are on holiday. The house is designed to suit anyone with mobility difficulties.

Completed in 2008 to a very high standard, we built this home for our own use and as much outdoor living as possible. You'll be surprised and delighted by the space and light both inside and out. Our family and friends find it a perfect place for a relaxing holiday - an added bonus!

| Our private driveway leads to an electric gate which gives access to a large courtyard with covered car port. A lockable door leads past the hacienda and pool area towards the side entrance door of the house. The first room is a huge superbly-equipped Miele kitchen with masses of storage and work surface and a breakfast bar for two. Through an archway the large sitting/dining room has comfy sofas and armchairs, an open log fire for winter evenings, 40 inch LED TV, a dining table, which extends for 10 and floor-to-ceiling double glazed french windows looking south towards the sea. At the far end of the living room another archway leads to the study, guest WC/shower room and ground floor bedroom with en-suite bathroom. Upstairs, the master bedroom with en-suite shower room and large private balcony is not normally rented out because our clothes fill most of the built-in wardrobes and drawers! |

Designed with maximum granite surface area and storage space. Fully equipped with Miele fridge, freezer, electric hob and two ovens, dishwasher and washing machine. Other electrical appliances include a microwave, toaster, kettle, juicer and food processor. There are plenty of cooking utensils, crockery, glassware and cutlery for 8 guests and handy breakfast bar with two stools. A washing line, drying rack, iron and ironing board are provided. |

1 ground-floor en-suite bedroom with sea views through sliding glass doors which lead out to a verandah and a colourful garden. The two beds can be made up as one large double or two single beds. Upstairs, the master bedroom with en-suite shower room and large private balcony is not normally rented out. |

The en-suite downstairs bathroom has a bath with hand-held shower, wash basin, WC and bidet and, for those who prefer a shower, next door is a large walk-in shower, WC and wash basin. Upstairs the en-suite bathroom has a large walk-in shower, wash basin, WC and bidet. In addition there is a shower room with WC in the hacienda area by the pool. All bathrooms (except the pool shower room) have electric towel rails.

Outside by the kitchen, the hacienda has a BBQ, a teak table which will seat 8 and plenty of shade. There are two sun loungers, a sun umbrella and a cheerful shower room. The pool is 1.4 metres deep throughout, the water is filtered automatically and heated in cooler months. Guests might like to skim the surface to remove insects and petals, but are asked not to venture into the machine room which is kept locked deliberately. If necessary, Jose, contacted through our cleaner Vanda, will alter settings for you and come and clean the pool in our absence.
The gardens and lawn extend about 15 metres beyond the far side of the house to the boundary wall. If you open the locked gate in the wall you can turn left or right on the narrow "vereda" (footpath). Left leads down towards the nearest mini-mart, post office, church, bakery and excellent fruit & veg shop; right takes you uphill to the chemist and myriad inter-connecting veredas to explore more of the village. If you keep going up - we warn you it is steep - you eventually reach a levada path which you can walk along east or west for many kilometres of varied and beautiful scenery. |

You'll find all that you would expect of a private home, including bedlinen, bath and pool towels, a hairdryer, wireless broadband access, tourist information, lots of books, DVDs, and CDs are provided and changed weekly. Cleaning and a change of linen and towels is provided weekly. A good supply of logs is available for winter months and the underfloor heating can be useful then too. You are welcome to dip into our supplies of basic cooking ingredients, herbs, etc. Sorry, we prefer not to accept young children because of the pool and smoking outside only please. |

Casa Madrinha is in a perfect holiday location! Situated 260 metres above sea level and accessed by its own private road amongst banana plantations and small holdings, the house sits on a terrace in the pretty, rural village of Arco da Calheta well away from the bustle of Funchal. Thanks to the new road system anywhere on the island is now within easy reach and some of the island's top attractions are only a short drive away. Within 5 minutes' drive you reach Vila Calheta with its protected beach of golden sand, a large marina offering dolphin/whale watching excursions and deep sea fishing boats for charter, a hotel, supermarket, art gallery and good choice of restaurants; or 25 minutes' drive will bring you to the protected laurel forests, levadas and waterfall wonderland of Rabaçal and the wide open expanses of the Paul da Serra - fantastic walking terrain. If you're brave you can hang-glide from the ridge about the village! Car hire is necessary to enjoy all that this area has to offer and to explore the beautiful island of Madeira.
